Bari Weiss
Cory amplifies 9×Anti-censorship and heterodoxy (The Free Press; now CBS News editor-in-chief).
Bari Weiss is a journalist and editor who wrote and edited opinion at The Wall Street Journal and then The New York Times, from which she resigned in July 2020 with a public letter alleging a hostile, conformist newsroom. She founded the independent media company The Free Press and hosts its 'Honestly' podcast. In October 2025, Paramount acquired The Free Press (~$150M) and named Weiss editor-in-chief of CBS News, a role she holds while continuing to run The Free Press.
The strongest case
Healthy public discourse depends on institutions that tolerate dissent and viewpoint diversity rather than enforcing ideological conformity, so building independent journalism that platforms heterodox voices and resists newsroom groupthink is a defense of free inquiry.
And against
Critics contend her 'anti-cancel-culture' framing is applied selectively and underplays her own commitments, and that taking the top editorial job at CBS News while retaining The Free Press raises real questions about independence and corporate conflicts.
