Rand Paul is an ophthalmologist and the junior U.S. Senator (R) from Kentucky since 2011, a libertarian-leaning Republican and son of former Rep. Ron Paul. He ran for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination and is known for filibusters and fights against NSA mass surveillance, the Patriot Act, and federal spending. He chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (since 2025) and has been a leading critic of Anthony Fauci and U.S. COVID-19 policy.

A free society requires hard limits on state power: no bulk warrantless surveillance of citizens, no undeclared wars, no unaccountable bureaucracies, and defending constitutional civil liberties and fiscal restraint protects individuals against overreach regardless of which party holds power.

In November 2017 Paul's neighbor Rene Boucher attacked him at his Kentucky home, breaking six of his ribs. Boucher pleaded guilty in federal court to assaulting a member of Congress (30 days in prison, a fine, community service); a Kentucky jury later awarded Paul $582,834 in a civil suit.
