Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has represented New York's 14th District in the U.S. House since January 2019, after defeating a long-serving incumbent in the 2018 Democratic primary. A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, she sits on the House Oversight and Financial Services committees. She is best known for co-introducing the Green New Deal resolution and for a large social-media following.
The strongest case
The scale and pace of climate change, she argues, justify a federal industrial mobilization that treats decarbonization and job creation as one project rather than competing goals. She contends that programs like guaranteed healthcare and public investment are affordable in the world's wealthiest economy and that the burden should fall on the highest earners, whose effective tax rates have fallen over decades. Her case is that incremental policy has repeatedly failed to match the problems' scale.

The Green New Deal resolution she co-authored set sweeping goals without attaching a costed financing mechanism or a phased implementation path, leaving supporters and critics to guess at price tags and tradeoffs. Several of her signature proposals have not advanced to floor votes even under Democratic majorities, raising a fair question about whether the agenda is a governing plan or a messaging platform.
